Het derde trimester – Klaar voor de grote ontmoeting

The Third Trimester – Getting Ready for the Big Meet

Mirthe Grooten

There you are, in the final stages of your pregnancy! The third trimester is the final sprint, the period from week 28 until birth. The tension is rising, your belly is reaching its full potential, and your body is preparing for labor. Fatigue and discomfort may return, but this is also the time for nesting and the final, loving preparations.

We'll tell you what's happening in your body, how your baby is growing, what you can do to reduce any ailments, and how to prepare for the final sprint.

Your body: preparing for the start

Your body is working towards the big moment. Everything you feel now has a purpose.

  • Recurring fatigue: You're carrying a heavy weight, and sleep can be disrupted. Rest isn't a luxury now, but a necessity.

  • Physical discomfort: Back pain, pelvic pain, swollen ankles, shortness of breath, and heartburn are common. Your baby takes up a lot of space.

  • Braxton-Hicks contractions: Your uterus is practicing for labor. These practice contractions are irregular and, unlike real contractions, don't increase in strength or frequency.

  • Nesting instinct: The sudden, irresistible urge to clean the whole house and get everything ready for the baby. Give in to it (in moderation); it helps you mentally prepare.

  • Mental preparation: Thoughts about childbirth and motherhood come and go. A mix of excitement and healthy tension is completely normal.

Your baby: the final steps

Your baby is now mainly concerned with growing, gaining weight and maturing for life outside the womb.

  • Weeks 28-32: Your baby is storing fat, which helps regulate their temperature after birth. Their brain is undergoing significant development.

  • Weeks 33-36: The baby often descends, which can give you more breathing room but also puts more pressure on your bladder. The lungs are almost fully mature.

  • Weeks 37-40+: From week 37, your baby is officially "full term" (or "at term"). This means their development is complete and they are ready for life outside the womb.

Your checklist for the final sprint

Use these last few weeks to finalize your preparations and mentally surrender to what is to come.

  1. Pack your hospital bag: Make sure your bag is ready for the hospital or birth. Don't just think about the basics, but also about things that will give you comfort and peace of mind (your favorite pillow, a playlist, tasty snacks).

  2. Get your house baby-ready: Add the finishing touches to the nursery, wash the first clothes with neutral detergent, and install the car seat. Checking off these tasks will give you peace of mind.

  3. Prepare for the postpartum period: The important recovery and bonding period after delivery is also known as the "fourth trimester". Cook and freeze meals, discuss with your partner how you'll divide the tasks, and think about a postpartum plan (who can visit and when?).

  4. Keep moving gently: Short walks and swimming can help with discomfort and stimulate your circulation. Always listen to your body's limits.

  5. Practice and relax: Repeat the breathing techniques from your pregnancy class. Take time daily for a meditation or relaxation exercise. This will help you build confidence.

  6. Discuss your wishes: Revisit your birth plan with your partner and midwife. What are your wishes and concerns? Good communication is key.

  7. Savor the last moments: Plan a final date with your partner. Enjoy the peace and quiet at home, read a book, take a warm bath. Cherish the silence and the movements of your belly.

  8. Trust your body: Perhaps the most important tip. Your body was designed to do this. Try to let go of fears and trust your primal power and the process. You can do this.

The third trimester is an intense, yet magical, transitional period. You're almost at the finish line. Every day brings you closer to meeting your baby. Savor the anticipation and be proud of this incredible achievement.
